The Golden Horse Film Festival will present five works at the Cannes Film Festival next week. They are the "Chronicles of Libidoists," "Dead Talents Society," "Kung Fu," "A Foggy Tale," and "Daughter’s Daughter." "A Foggy Tale" is the first film by director Chen Yu-hsun that addresses Taiwan’s White Terror period. The movie stars Caitlin Fang, who had to hone her Taiwanese language skills for the role. Let’s hear from them.

Caitlin Fang
Actor
Before shooting, I had to attend Taiwanese language classes. After class, I’d go home and practice as much as I could with my mom. When driving me to school, the radio would be on a Taiwanese channel. I’d read the whole script out loud once a day. By the time it was time to shoot, I had already memorized the whole script.

Chen Yu-hsun
Director
I thought the film would be impossible to complete. Because the script depicts scenes that no longer exist in modern Taiwan. All the actors speak Taiwanese, or with rural mainlander accents. It’s something you can’t really find among younger generations nowadays. So I wrote the script and thought that would be the end of it. I find I’ve become a better person after filming this story.

"Kung Fu" star Ko Chen-tung says he’s looking forward to attending Cannes, his first international film festival. Director Giddens Ko says Cannes has always seemed like a distant dream. He says he appreciates the support of the people who helped get his film to the festival.
