The production studio of Japanese manga artist Akira Toriyama has announced that the renowned image creator died of a brain condition last Friday, March 1. The 68-year-old mangaka was internationally acclaimed for global hits such as the Dragon Ball series and Dr. Slump.

Taiwan lawmaker Huang Jie mourned his death on social media, saying as a child, she would watch Dragon Ball while doing her homework. Meanwhile, novelist Giddens Ko shared images of a manga he had drawn imitating Toriyama’s style. Some fans of the manga artist said they immediately rushed out to buy figurines of his characters upon hearing of his death. The owner of a model shop reported that more than 10 customers had come in through the day to make a purchase.
