Chen Yi-tung has become Taiwan’s first male Olympian in fencing since 1988. He booked his ticket to Paris by winning the men’s individual foil event at the Asian-Oceanian qualifiers in the United Arab Emirates.

Twenty-one-year-old Chen was introduced to fencing in the third grade. At 15 years old, he was the youngest athlete to represent Taiwan at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Chen is the sixth Taiwanese fencer to ever qualify for the Olympics. The last time a Taiwanese fencer competed was 12 years ago, when Hsu Jo-ting made the Top 32 in the women’s epee event.
