Nearly 40 members of U.S. Congress attended a reception on Wednesday held by Taiwan’s de facto embassy in Washington to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the U.S. Taiwan Relations Act. In attendance were American Institute in Taiwan chair Laura Rosenberger and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Michael McCaul, the Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced at the event that he would lead a delegation to attend president-elect Lai Ching-te’s inauguration in May.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office held a reception on Capitol Hill to mark the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. No less than nine American senators were present, along with some 30 representatives.

The TRA has been instrumental for the United States to provide Taiwan’s defense capabilities and insists on the peaceful resolution of cross-strait disputes to help Taiwan resist coercion and support Taiwan’s meaningful international participation. These bedrock commitments provide Taiwan’s security and the political space to create a vibrant democracy.

And now they are getting ready for a new president and I know that our country will be represented around the time of that, and I think it’s a very, very important message to the world that this is a relationship we value strategically, security-wise, politically, culturally, trade-wise, economically and all the rest.

While former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hopes to further the strengthening of Taiwan-U.S. relations, Republican Michael McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced he will travel to Taiwan to attend the inauguration of president-elect Lai Ching-te.

First of all, I’ll be leading a delegation to Taiwan to celebrate the president’s inauguration in Taiwan… we need to do more to provide that deterrence necessary to ensure that aggressive, hostile takeover never occurs.

Last year, McCaul visited Taiwan, provoking an unhappy response from China. Now that he has resolutely announced that he will attend Lai’s inauguration celebrations, it shows that U.S. Congress is not afraid of China. It has once again demonstrated its firm determination to support Taiwan in the face of China’s continual escalation of regional tensions.
